Rio Tinto bids $38.1 billion for Alcan
Rio Tinto Group of London agreed to buy Montreal’s Alcan Inc. for $38.1 billion in cash, halting a hostile bid by Alcoa Inc. of Pittsburgh to form the world's biggest aluminum maker, according to Bloomberg.com July 13.

Alcoa withdrew its offer, which was 33 percent lower than the $101 a share pledged by London-based Rio Tinto, a producer of as many as 19 metals and minerals on six continents, according to the story. Biesse to expand Charlotte headquarters
Biesse America, Charlotte, N.C., recently acquired about 14 acres adjacent to its headquarters to expand, according to a July 10 company release.

The new building, future North American headquarters, will contain offices, parts and service areas, and expanded showroom, according to the release. It will be about 80,000 square feet, 25,000 of which will be showroom to accommodate a larger variety of glass- and stone-working machinery and One2One seminars and customized demonstrations, according to the release.

The company plans to break ground in December and open the new facility by July 2009.
