Glass executives head to Finland for conference
The Glass Performance Days conference and expo will get underway this week, drawing an expected 1,000 attendees from about 60 countries to Tampere, Finland, for the five-day event.
Glass representatives can attend 15 workshops June 14-15 and more than 200 presentations during the conference, June 15-18.
Conference organizers changed the name of the event from Glass Processing Days to Glass Performance Days to better reflect the scope of the program. A major focus of the conference is energy savings and energy performance in buildings, according to the conference program.
Other presentation topic areas include architectural challenges and solutions, laminated glass design, changing markets, new products and applications, and quality assurance in design and production.
The opening session on June 15 features a panel of executives from three leading float glass manufacturers—Tomoaki Abe, vice chairman of Japan’s Nippon Sheet Glass, Russell Ebeid, president of Guardian Industries Corp. in Auburn Hills, Mich., and Arthur Ulens, president of AGC Flat Glass and chief executive officer of Glaverbel in Brussels.
The panel will address operating conditions, challenges and requirements of a global market, and the interdependence of international and local industry companies.
Fiona Hall, the European Parliament’s rapporteur on the European Commission’s Energy Efficiency Action Plan, also will speak during the opening session about working with governments to green the glass industry.
“For our part, we firmly believe in developing the industry through cooperation and exploring ways to meet new legislative and policy objectives for the streamlining of energy efficiency,” said Jorma Vitkala, chairman of the GPD organizing committee, in a May 26 GPD release. “The industry has taken it upon itself to meet new legislative and policy objectives for the streamlining of energy efficiency.”
