Producer prices continue to rise in July

Rising producer prices for glass through the last 12 months matched a steep rise in product prices for overall nonresidential buildings, according to data released Aug. 15 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, part of the U.S. Department of Labor.

While product prices for nonresidential buildings rose only 0.6 percent during July, they sit 8 percent higher than June 2005, according to the BLS data.

Product prices for multi-unit residential buildings also edged up 0.7 percent during the month; up 8.5 percent year-over-year.

Flat-glass prices reached 114.6 in July, up 1.1 percent from June and 3.2 percent compared to July 2005.

The flat-glass category includes three subcategories: laminated; sheet, plate and float; and specialty.

Prices for sheet, plate and float glass—glass that comes directly from manufacturers—rose 3.3 percent to 97.0 during July, up 5.2 percent from last year.

Laminated prices rose just 0.1 percent during the month to 89.9, up 2.7 percent compared to July 2005.

Glass statistics are based on a price of $100 in January 1982. The data remain preliminary and can change for four months after original publication.
