BEC Conference Draws 600 Industry Leaders to Las Vegas

Nearly 600 glass and glazing industry representatives gathered in Las Vegas last week for the 2019 BEC Conference. The event, hosted by the National Glass Association, addressed the ongoing labor shortage, strategic planning for glaziers, contract best practices, next-generation project management and more.

Bird Glass Collisions
Glass is a leading cause of bird deaths in North America. Between 365 and 988 million birds are killed every year in the United States due to collisions with glass. Unlike many other leading causes for bird deaths, such as loss of habitat or the effects of climate change, bird/glass collisions are easily preventable.

Butt-Glazed Fire-Resistive System from Technical Glass Products (TGP)

The Earth, Energy & Environment Center (EEEC) at the University of Kansas, features transparent learning areas that allow students and peers to look into active labs and tech areas.  To maintain this open, shared-use research concept in areas where the building code required fire resistance, the design team used Fireframes ClearView® System by Technical Glass Products.  The narrow, butt-glazed fire-rated glazing system provides a continuous glass aesthetic with nearly colorless transitions between adjoining pieces of glass.

Hartford Times Building, University of Connecticut

Contract glazier: True Enterprises
Glass fabricator: Viracon
Window supplier: Winco Windows

When the University of Connecticut relocated its campus to downtown Hartford, the university chose the historic Hartford Times Building. The structure and its Beaux-Arts façade, built in 1920 to house the Hartford Times, is a downtown landmark that was previously vacant. Its granite columns, marble steps and massive oak doors, all salvaged from a Manhattan church by the original architect, required restoration and stabilization. A new 140,000-square-foot addition complements the original neoclassical design while providing modern-day features and amenities needed by a world-class research university. Authentic restoration included historically accurate replacement windows. Read more...
