LEED v4 Pushing Manufacturers to Disclose Products’ Environmental Impact

Life cycle assessments for windows have topped discussions at recent industry meetings, as the commercial and residential window industries move closer to finalizing the product category rules necessary for manufacturers to begin the LCA process. Driving the move for LCA on the commercial side, in part, is the newest version of LEED.

The Las Vegas economy and construction market is showing signs of new life, with unemployment on the decline, and new building on the rise. But as home building improves, and construction cranes begin to populate the strip in increasing numbers, I have to wonder if the rebounding Las Vegas has learned from the sins of its past?

One area where the glass and glazing industry is a true leader is in hurricane glazing products. Right now, the United States is on a record run with it being nine years since a major hurricane hit landfall. The clock starts in a few weeks; we’ll see if we once again dodge the major bullet. At least we know the products this industry provides will be doing their jobs well.

Seeking to increase energy efficiency, Apple Education Services, owners of an old elementary school building that now houses the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School in Buffalo, N.Y., chose to replace 460 outdated windows with tilt & turn replacement windows. Manufactured with a bronze exterior color and a white interior, the windows provide the building with a refreshed new look while still blending well with its existing aesthetics.
