Project news University of Cincinnati gets high-tech research complex

The basics: A renovated Medical Sciences Building and new Center for Academic Research Excellence will provide the University of Cincinnati with one of the largest health science research facilities in the United States. The two buildings, linked by an eight-story glass atrium, include more than 1 million square feet of space. Completed in May 2008, the $204 million project required about 24,000 square feet of glazing at a cost of $4 million. Architects designed the complex to qualify for U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification.
The players: Architects, Studios Architecture, San Francisco, and Harley Ellis Devereaux, Chicago; general contractor, Dick Corp., Pittsburgh; glazing contractor, Novum Structures LLC, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; glass fabricators, Eckelt Glas, Austria, Viracon, Owatonna, Minn.
The glass and systems: Glazing consists of clear glass laminated with a clear polyvinyl butyral interlayer, with low-E coating on the No. 2 surface of the curtain wall. Novum created point-supported glass systems for the buildings’ north and south exterior walls, vestibules, interior wall and canopy, and constructed transparent, structural glass floors for the buildings bridges and elevators. North and south curtain walls consist of a custom steel truss and tension rod structure with ethylene propylene diene monomer, or EPDM, glazing system. The north wall measures 47 feet 8 inches wide and 160 feet tall, and the south wall is 51 feet wide and 136 feet tall. Point supported glass fin wall vestibules are 9 feet 9 inches wide,16 feet long and 10 feet tall, and PSG interior wall measures 24 feet 2 inches wide and 96 feet tall.
