The basics: BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co. purchased a vacant 112,500-square-foot two-story anchor store in downtown Charleston to build the company’s new headquarters. The $11 million revitalized office space, completed in August 2007, houses about 500 employees. By maximizing natural light and views from the building’s open sides and adding skylights, the design permits daylight to penetrate into the building’s interior to the central work station areas. For the executive offices, partial-height interior partitions with butt-joint glazing above, allow light and views through to the center space while maintaining privacy. Exterior aluminum sun louvers control and direct the sunlight. Glazing for the project cost $1.1 million.
