Project news
West Virginia big-box retail shell converts to daylit office space
“The glass allows natural light to reach the interior of the building by incorporating ½-inch interior butt-glazed glass walls inside of the vision areas of the curtain wall.”
—Mike Holt, project manager, Central Glass Co.
The basics: BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co. purchased a vacant 112,500-square-foot two-story anchor store in downtown Charleston to build the company’s new headquarters. The $11 million revitalized office space, completed in August 2007, houses about 500 employees. By maximizing natural light and views from the building’s open sides and adding skylights, the design permits daylight to penetrate into the building’s interior to the central work station areas. For the executive offices, partial-height interior partitions with butt-joint glazing above, allow light and views through to the center space while maintaining privacy. Exterior aluminum sun louvers control and direct the sunlight. Glazing for the project cost $1.1 million.
The players: Owner, BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co., Charleston, W.Va.; architect, Associated Architects Inc., Charleston, 304/345-1811; general contractor, BBL-Carlton LLC, Charleston; glazing contractor, Central Glass Co., Charleston; glass fabricator, Oldcastle Glass, Santa Monica, Calif.; curtain wall fabricator, YKK AP America Inc., Austell, Ga.
The glass and systems: Oldcastle Glass provided insulating glazing consisting of PPG Solarcool gray with reflective surface on the No. 2 side, and laminated low-E glass on the interior side. The original 10,000-square-foot precast concrete panel exterior was replaced with YKK AP YCW 750OG, 2 1/2-inch-by-7 1/2-inch, aluminum curtain wall and ThermaShade aluminum sun shades with 30-inch projection and wedged outriggers, both with clear anodized finish.
