Glass pillar to stand as Omagh Memorial
“We have won the international design competition for a memorial for the Omagh bomb, the single biggest event in the history of the Northern Ireland conflict. … The design includes a pillar that should appear at least to be made of solid glass. Near the top, inside, will float a cut-glass faceted heart shape.” – Seán Hillen
|
The basics: The winning design for the Omagh Memorial in Omagh, Ireland, is a 15-foot high glass pillar. The monument will be at the site of the Omagh bombing—a car bomb attack back in August 1998 that killed 31 and injured about 220. The artist and architect are currently accepting bids from glass companies for the installation.
The players: Artist, Seán Hillen, Dublin; landscape architect, Desmond Fitzgerald, Dun Laoghaire, Ireland.
The glass: The design consists of a15-foot tall tapering glass pillar, with a 4 foot by 2-foot base and a cut-glass heart shape toward the top. The nearby Memorial Garden will feature 31 poles with sun-tracking mirrors on the top, representing those that died. The mirrors will be situated so they reflect light onto the pillar throughout the day, Hillen says.
